Is Fashion Art?

 In a few words...yes!

The dictionary defines art as 'the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.'
Just like an artist, a fashion designer needs  to develop a concept on what they want their range or garment to look like and the meaning for it. Believe it or not, but every clothing design, whether its for Target or Chanel, has been made through some sort of creative thought process. Although sometimes the aesthetic design may be limited, it's function will alway serve a meaning and purpose.
A simple digital print on a moderately cheap top, still has been designed and created on photoshop or a similar program, just like a lot of contemporary art has been created through today.
Designers create their works through the conceptual ideas or raw feelings they have at the time. Just like an artist, a fashion designer or stylist can express themselves within the layers of their work. Some designs will serve a purpose and concept of just being purely aesthetically beautiful, but these designs still show a form of art through it's qualities, such as it's shape, colour and form.
A range can tell a story, a dress can show the designer's emotion felt at the time, and a couture gown can be a beautiful hand crafted piece of fine art. We live in a society where the buildings, furniture, technology, nature, and even the world itself can be called a work of art, so why can't fashion be?
